Detail;
Basic:
No matter how you look at it, the twins are, indeed, insane. After years of experiments, their brains are practically nuked, leaving them eternally the kids they were during the early stages of the experiments they underwent. Despite this torture, though, the twins appear to be quite happy upon first impressions. One could easily describe them as mischievous children, doing whatever they can get to get attention. Together, they love to tease and torment their peers, seemingly unaware of the extremities they drag it to. Always having their other half to rely on, they have a confident arrogance to them that is difficult to shake, and are perfectly fine with using anyone around them for amusement any way they can.

That being said, despite their childish naïveté, the twins live up to the Rekenber name in their sadism. Often saying things are "prettier" dead, the two have frequent homicidal impulses purely for their own amusement. They have little comprehension for the concept of "death" (in regards to other people), however, and consider it more as eliminating nuisances or simply relieving their own urges.

Still beings kids, their disrespectful behavior can be quelled if someone is stern enough with them. When this happens, they are surprisingly obedient and supportive, although it is not a frequent occurrence, as one slip from said person and they can turn on them in an instant. No matter the circumstance, though, their walls are built very high and the option of even considering letting someone into their confidence never comes to mind.

They are very deep into their own world, and show no sign of coming out nor allowing anyone in any time soon.

Individual Personality:
    ARSENIC

Between the two, Arsenic is the more responsible twin, and seems to understand more than his younger brother. He is far more aware of he and his brother's predicament, feeling it to be his responsibility to watch over Astatine due to his reckless behavior. Despite his friendly smile, the years have made him extremely resentful toward the world he is certain is against them, and he knowingly enjoys making others feel horrible to make himself feel better. He is extremely unsatisfied, believing he and his brother deserve the best for everything they have been through.

He is extremely resilient to change, and particularly paranoid over the thought that he could lose his brother in some way due to it. Because of which, he does not like to share his brother in any sense, which conflicts with his brother's friendliness (as he doesn’t understand Astatine's motives). If they do make any "friends", it isn't long before Arsenic sabotages the friendship in some way, once again keeping his brother only for himself. His own insecurity is doubtlessly a huge part of this, as he wants to be "perfect" for his brother and often feels he is failing; and the last thing he wants is for someone else to take his place.

In the company of others, Arsenic is very cocky, yet when alone with his brother he is almost a completely different person. He often makes himself very frustrated, resulting in him crying and even throwing fits like a child. He'll sob and rant to his brother about whatever is on his mind, usually involving his hate for everyone and everything other than his other half. It would be extremely rare for anyone else to stumble across this scene, however, as he only falls into this level of comfort when it’s just he and his brother in their own little world. Although if he does manage this with others around (which would probably only be under intense stress or the influence of alcohol or sickness), he is prone to becoming violent, and won't hesitate to take his frustrations out on whoever dares provoke it.

He greatly dislikes being touched unexpectedly, and one could even say he has an obviously traumatized effect from it. If he doesn't consciously allow it, he will usually freeze up and tremble for a moment, occasionally whimpering his brother's name. It only takes a few seconds for him to regain his composure in most cases, but by this point his brother is usually already taking care of the problem.

    ASTATINE

Being the more boyish twin in between the two, Astatine introduces himself with grins and smirks in comparison to Arsenic. He is outgoing and spontaneous, saying things that immediately crosses his mind, regardless whether it would be a compliment or an insult (and as long as you're polite with him, you're on the safe side). Laughing, in all conditions bad or good, is also one of his traits in which he cannot avoid. Although he may appear friendly and talkative at certain aspects, he never fails to include his brother in everything he does or points out about.

Considering that Astatine isn't very bright, he had always thought highly of his older twin and seemingly that Arsenic's words were never taken into consideration before, he decides to put full attention to them; unconsciously taking his brothers words as orders. He still has that habit of being utterly friendly with the purpose of wanting people to realize how much potential his twin has (and Arsenic not knowing this just makes it all the more complicated). There is a large part of it all in which Astatine will never cease to understand. Even though he rarely cries, he would never understood why if he did do so either, so it has become a habit for him to laugh if none of it could be comprehended.

That being said, Astatine can be boastful, arrogant and proud as long as Arsenic is there by his side. Even in public, affection is the only method Astatine can manage to provide his brother with, thus once they're separated, panic would start sinking in and all that confidence would falter; that psychopathic display replaced with the presence of a lost child. Otherwise, he seems rather rough with the others, but with Arsenic, a softer side of him emerges and treats his brother as gentle as he could possibly afford when they're in their own world.

Over the years, Astatine had grown accustomed to enjoying blood and pain, including his own; believing that the more pain he can take, the less his brother would receive. He is also prone to react in a violent way whenever Arsenic's safety zone is disrupted and would never hesitate to take the front line for the sake of his other half. Even if he fails to manage thinking properly in any situation, his body is mechanical in that way and will not rest until his brother is calm again. Generally, he has no problems with people trying to overthrow him as he sees it as being "playful" instead and would gladly play their game. All in all, Astatine is pretty much a reckless individual who ignores his own well-being in order to go ahead with his protective instincts.

History:
Arsenic and Astatine were born as Aciel and Ariyo Lukas in the hellhole known as Einbech. Aciel was born just before midnight on October 31st, his brother after midnight on November 1st. This was the start of all their problems.

Living in Einbech, Idalia Lukas and her husband Kadmiel Lukas couldn't afford the medical care to even know she was having twins. She was less than happy to know she was going into labor on a day like Halloween, and when the two were finally born, a negative connotation was attached to them. Being extremely superstitious, she believed thoroughly in the myth that twins were bad luck, and seeing as one was born on such an "evil" day, it wasn’t looking good for the two. The fact that her twin children were identical other than their hair color perplexed her as well, considering neither she nor her husband had blue hair.

While Idalia only wanted to take care of the younger of the two twins, her husband insisted they care for both of them. And so they did, yet their family situation was less than fair. Idalia Lukas would only give Ariyo attention and affection, while Aciel was usually left to himself. Meanwhile, their father Kadmiel was leaving the house more and more for extended "business trips", and never seemed to be quite himself after the birth of his two children. As the years passed, sometimes he would even be gone for weeks at a time.

When the twins were six years old is when they started becoming close. Really, before which they hardly even talked, as Idalia was almost obsessive with her attention toward Ariyo as her husband was gone more and more, while Aciel spent most of his time alone in his room doing whatever he could to pass the time. But as one night Ariyo woke up to find his brother crying alone in his room, they soon started to grow a bond, even if Aciel was hesitant at first.

Then things started to go increasingly downhill. Idalia was not pleased at this happening, and was becoming angrier and angrier. Almost a year of sporadic absences later, Kadmiel Lukas came home only to give a few words to the twins about how they are brothers and need to look out for one another, left them his pocket watch and was never seen again. The twins said nothing of this to their mother, whom after a long while of waiting realized her husband was never coming back. She started to drink fanatically, quickly becoming an alcoholic with violent mood swings and only her two sons to unleash them on.

The twins were right now, and had grown exceedingly close to one another; and when they went into their mother's room only to find her dead from alcohol poisoning on the floor, it would be a lie to say they were sad. But immediately after they were dragged to the Einbech Orphanage, who only accepted them due to the extra funds from the government they would receive for taking them in, which didn’t make things much better.

As the town had already pinned such a negative connotation on them (as Aciel being considered "bad luck" and a "curse", and often a "devil"), the kids were less than friendly with them. While they were more accepting to Ariyo, the younger twin refused to do anything without his brother, whom the kids would not accept. They had to share the same bed and often one meal between them, not that they minded. The corrupt woman who owned the orphanage and the malicious children only served to make them build their walls higher and higher.

Things stayed this way for three years until the day that a family from Einbroch came to adopt a child, and taking a liking to the quiet and obedient Aciel, they chose him. Unfortunately they weren’t interested in adopting two kids, and even if it was against policy to separate twins, the woman in charge did not hesitate to rid the town of the "devil" as well as receive the rather hefty payment from the couple for the child. While the couple promised that they twins could visit one another, upon hearing the news, the brothers were devastated.

As the couple was going to arrive in the morning to pick Aciel up, the two brothers ran away that night.

For two eleven year olds, they made it surprisingly far on foot. But they were only kids, not knowing where they were going or when they would get there, and after a two days and that night of travel, they aimlessly ended up near the city of Lighthalzen. Exhausted and weak, their bad luck once again made itself obvious when they were found by a few men who had nothing pleasant on their minds in store for the two kids. While Ariyo tried to fight them off, he was quickly struck aside by one of the men, and after such a journey the two really didn’t stand a chance. Luckily for them, before anything drastic could happen, they were rescued by a street-smart teenager by the name of Maku.

As Ariyo had been knocked out and Aciel had passed out from exhaustion, Maku picked up the two and brought them to his home in the Lighthalzen slums, where they would stay for the next two years. While their relationship started off rocky, the twins grew very close to Maku and gradually considered the slums with Maku to be their "home". They lived in a house that was left to Maku when his mother died, along with quite a few other of the homeless kids who happened to live in the slums and needed a place to stay.

These good times were not to last, however, as two years later the slums were raided, as apparently a renegade scientist was seen running into it. Guards and scientists came in his wake, and as the people of Lighthalzen saw those who lived in the slums as lesser people, they did not hesitate to wreak havoc as they looked for the traitor. Houses were broken into, places trashed and set on fire, and people dragged out of their homes and beaten as they were interrogated for information. Maku, seeing the dangers of the situation, made the plan to distract them while the twins escaped safely. Things once again did not go according to plan, however, when the twins could not leave Maku to get beaten for their sakes and went to try and protect him.

However, realizing they were twins, one the scientists made a deal with them. If they were to come along, they would leave Maku alone. It was an offer they accepted despite Maku’s protests, and after the guards had knocked the shouting teenager out, they twins were brought off to the labs.

Of course the two had no idea what they were getting into. Rekenber had a special section dedicated to just the experiments of twins, run by a certain Doctor Vance Weston Faust. Dr. Faust appeared to be a pleasant man; he was refined, intelligent, and could even be considered friendly toward the twins that Rekenber gathered for him. By face value, one could say that the twins had even better living conditions than the others Rekenber had, but they had a more cryptic future planned for them. Faust was truly a twisted person under his pleasant exterior, and he had several experiments customized just for the use on twins, as having someone near identical to compare results to was a blessing for him.

Aciel's and Ariyo's experiments began early, as the doctor hadn't expected them to live anyways. The two soon became his favorites, however, as they did live longer than he initially expected. He wanted to build a stronger connection between the two, even if through extremely unorthodox methods (the one he was proudest of was managing to switch their hearts with one another's). He grew extremely fond of them and their will to live, and while they did get perks out of this, they also had to endure even worse experiments and punishments as he soon just expected them to live through near anything. He also insisted that the two refer to him as "Papa".

Because of these experiments, the twins did gain an extremely strong connection and dependence on one another. While one would be experimented on or punished even in a different room, the other would experience the red-eyed adrenaline mode even without being told of what was happening to their brother. Sometimes they would even appear to share pain somehow to relieve the other's suffering if even just by a bit. Along with this, other side effects from these experiments are still obvious in them. They often understand the other's needs without the assistance of words and occasionally even "share" dreams and nightmares as they sleep.

But the most obvious effect of the experiments is their extreme dependence on one another. While together, people often refer to them as "invincible" as they were made to balance one another, apart they are the complete opposite. If forced to separate if even in the slightest, they experience an extreme separation anxiety. Their confidence is completely replaced with total desperation, and they often appeared lost and frantic to get to one another. In this state they can't even defend themselves, and the insanity they were driven to from the years of experimentation becomes most clear. However, most are unaware of this fact about the two.

After the years and years of experiments, as they were only released the year prior, their brains have been significantly nuked and they can not remember their past before the Lighthalzen labs. Along with this, they don't remember their real names, and while Astatine does not seem to realize this, it is a fact that just brings even more frustration on Arsenic's part.
